Vortex Crosswinds Tempest Guide

The new Riptide Tempest build is better for AoE damage but this build has great AoE damage and higher single target damage. This build uses the Wind Edge primary attack with Vortex, Crosswinds, Squall, and Rolling Surf. Vortex with the Overflow chest essence damages nearby enemies and knocks them into the air, The Shoal shoulder essence makes Vortex shatter the armor of enemies, and the Glory to Ksathra weapon essence makes Vortex increase your primary attack speed. This build also uses the Squall dash attack to mark enemies for 3 seconds causing them to take a portion of the damage dealt to them while they were marked. Crosswinds is used to make you and your Zephyrs' attacks release wind blades and Rolling Surf empowers you and your Zephyrs' primary attacks to throw water daggers at enemies.

Paragons & Legendary Skills: Vortex Crosswinds Tempest Build

1. Slayer is the best damage paragon for this build because it increases your damage and your primary attack speed.

2. Gladiator is the best PvP paragon tree for this build because it gives a cheat death and helps with loss of control.

3. Vanquisher is the best paragon tree for increased magic find and gives increased damage and attack speed on kills.

4. Harbinger can be used in Erebban for an absorb shield, movement speed, and to move unhindered through enemies.

5. Survivor is the recommended paragon for Vanguard because it gives a cheat death that works in Vanguard.

6. The best paragon legendary skill for this build is Overloaded because it increases your primary attack speed.

Main Hand

Skein-Parter - Rolling Surf now empowers you and your Zephyrs' primary attacks to throw water daggers.

Off-Hand

Hurricane Hitch - Crosswinds now empowers you and your Zephyrs' primary attacks to unleash wind blades.

Main Hand 2

Shriekworth (PvM) - Crosswinds critical hits cause four wind blades to shatter off the target.

Fiendfell (PvP) - Empowers Wind Edge every six seconds to deal additional damage and shatters the armor of enemies.

Off-Hand 2

Glory to Ksathra - Vortex now also increases your primary attack speed.

Helmet

Look Leeward - Squall marks enemies for three seconds dealing a portion of the damage you dealt to them while marked.

Chest

Overflow - Vortex now causes geysers to erupt underneath enemies knocking them into the air.

Shoulders

The Shoal - Vortex now also shatters enemies armor increasing their damage taken.

Legs

Howling Anchor - Crosswinds now also causes enemies to bleed over five seconds.

Note: This essence counts as damage over time which triggers the damage increase on the Pain Clasp legendary gem.

Recommended Sets

1. Vithu's Urges (2-4 Set) - Increases the duration of beneficial effects by 30% and gives an attack speed increase.

2. Gloomguide's Prize (4 Set) - Increases your damage and critical hit chance for three seconds after using a dash skill.

3. Untouchable Mountebank (PvP 2 Set) - Gives an absorb shield which is great for PvP.

Best Curses

1. Lashed - Use at least four items with this curse to make primary attacks cause three damaging whips on cooldown.

2. Vexed - You can use two items with this curse for a damaging roar when your minions are summoned on cooldown.

3. Wired - Optional to create a surge of lightning on kill that jumps between enemies with a medium length cooldown.

Best 5 Star Legendary Gems

1. Roiling Consequence - Increases your critical hit chance and causes critical hits to burn enemies.

2. Golden Firmament - Causes multiple ranged wind attacks and increases your evasion rating.

3. Colossus Engine - Gives increased skill damage, increased area of effect for Crosswinds (important), knockback immunity, and increased size which increases your movement speed for a medium duration on cooldown.

4. Gloom Cask - Deals damage when you use a primary attack on cooldown and increases your primary attack damage.

5. Starfire Shard - Deals AoE damage and stuns enemies in PvP inside the Maw of the Deep legendary gem effect.

6. Blood Floe - Lower priority 5 star gem that increases damage, critical hit chance, critical hit damage, and causes bleed.

7. Wulfheort (PvM) - After damaging enemies 5 times you slash them and increase attack speed for you and your allies.

8. Maw of the Deep (PvP) - Used at a high rank to deal damage, gain a damage buff, draw in enemies, and stun enemies.

9. Void Spark (PvM) - Deals AoE damage that's very effective for challenge dungeons, terror rifts, and speed farming.

10. Frozen Heart (PvP) - A strong legendary gem for PvP that gives an absorb shield and chills opponents.

Best 2 Star Legendary Gems

1. Pain Clasp - Gives high increased damage against enemies that have a continuous damage effect on them.

2. Mother's Lament - Increases your critical hit chance and causes a blood spike that makes enemies bleed.

3. Specter Glass - Increases the damage taken by enemies after critical hits and increases your critical hit chance.

4. Mourneskull - This legacy gem can be used to increase your damage and deal damage but it no longer drops.

5. Fervent Fang (PvM) - Gives a stacking damage increase when you hit an enemy stacking up to ten times.

6. Igneous Scorn (PvM) - Can be used with Roiling Consequence and Mother's Lament to deal damage on critical hits. Igneous Scorn is the lowest priority 2 star gem and should be the first to be replaced with a ranked up 5 star gem.

7. Crimson Behelit (PvP) - Strong PvP legacy gem with increased damage and reduced damage taken that's drop disabled.

Note: The Howling Anchor legs essence has bleed damage which triggers the damage increase on the Pain Clasp gem.

Best 1 Star Starter Legendary Gems

1. Berserker's Eye (PvM) - Increases all of your damage and critical hit chance but also increases your damage taken.

2. Entropic Well - A great budget one star legendary gem that increases your skill damage and attack speed.

3. Everlasting Torment - A budget gem that deals damage over time on critical hits and increases your attack speed.

Note: Berserker's Eye is a great one star legendary gem and requires a high ranked up 5 star gem to match its damage.

Best Familiars

1. Savior Duskprowler - Look for a 170+ Resilience legendary Duskprowler with the Savior passive skill which provides a cheat death and temporary damage immunity. The 170+ Resilience on the familiar lowers the cooldown of Savior.

2. Broodtalon/Skitterwight - Look for Savior which provides a cheat death and Lingering Wounds for increased damage.

3. Any Savior Familiar - Look for any 170+ Resilience familiar with Savior for a cheat death and great passive skills.

4. Rare Duskprowler - Relentless Strikes is the next best skill because it gives a chance to cast the Duskprowler shield twice. Innervate which gives a chance at resetting one of the player's skill cooldowns, Steel Hide which gives a chance to block, Precision which gives critical hit chance, and Tenacity which lowers the cooldown of the shield are also desirable.

5. Magic Duskprowler - Duskprowler shields are hard to replace so a rare or magic ability Duskprowler is the budget option.

Note: Broodtalons and Skitterwights have status effects over a duration which increases the duration of Lingering Wounds.

Normal Gems

Prioritize Tourmalines for added damage in red sockets and a combination of Citrines and Topazes for potency and resistances in yellow sockets for the highest refinement. Potency increases harmful effects durations on enemies and resistances decrease harmful effects durations on you. Citrines for potency is preferred if you only care about PvM damage but resistances come into play more with PvP. You should also use your highest refinement Aquamarines and Sapphires which give increased armor and armor penetration in blue sockets. You can optionally combine all of your bound Rubies which give life into one or two Rubies and socket them into your equipment if they give more refinement. Gems give refinement based on their quality and refinement increases the attributes on the equipment the gems are socketed in.

Gem Notes

The Blood Floe gem is a great option when it's combined with multiple sources of critical hit chance and critical hit damage. The fairly new Colossus Engine legendary gem is excellent for this build because it increases the area of effect of Crosswinds, increases your skill damage, has knockback immunity, and gives increased movement speed from its size increase. Viper's Bite and Seeping Bile aren't needed to trigger the damage increase on Pain Clasp from having continuous damage on the target because you will already have bleed from the Howling Anchor legs essence. Golden Firmament is a strong five star legendary gem that has wind damage, increased evasion rating, and it triggers Firestorms which increase your wind damage when it's mixed with burning damage. When using multiple increased critical hit chance legendary gems you should consider rolling increased critical hit damage on every piece of gear with Reforge Stones for increased damage. On that note, you should also roll increased beneficial effects duration on your equipment which is very important for 100% skill uptime. One of your lowest priority legendary gems should also be switched to a Frozen Heart five star legendary gem for PvP once you can afford to rank it up to rank 4+ for an absorb shield and to chill opponents.
