​1. Tempest - Vortex Crosswinds Tempest

 

Tempests are extremely strong for AoE damage compared to other classes at low to mid resonance levels. They perform even better for AoE damage once they have high increased beneficial effect duration for 100% uptime on their cooldowns. You can eventually enchant increased beneficial effect duration on your waist and boots slots once the enchant option has been unlocked and you can also add more increased beneficial effect duration from reforges on your legendary gear.

2. Barbarian - Whirlwind Barbarian

​​​

Whirlwind Barbarians received a major buff with the release of Torment XII with a new variation of Whirlwind that made them deal better single target and AoE damage. Instead of focusing on Endless Whirlwind, a new essence made Whirlwind return energy on hit while also making Whirlwind deal much higher damage. Whirlwind Barbarians are now extremely strong for AoE damage and they have the added benefit of having excellent mobility when attacking enemies.

3. Crusader - Aura Crusader

 

Crusaders are notorious for being a powerful AoE class especially at higher resonance levels. Judgement is used to rain fire down on nearby enemies and Condemn is used as a condensed lightning storm aura that instantly triggers damage over time effects. Crusaders are especially strong once they have very high potency because potency extends the duration of damage over time effects which are then instantly triggered on nearby enemies with the Condemn aura.

4. Wizard - Meteor Lightning Nova Wizard

The new meta Meteor Lightning Nova Wizard focuses on synergy with the Shock status effect from the fairly new Skybreaker's Bolt set to improve its damage. This build does extremely well with single target and AoE damage. It also has excellent mobility with Lightning Nova which increases your movement speed when using the recommended essences.

5. Monk - Cyclone Strike Tempest Rush Monk

The Tempest Rush Cyclone Strike Monk build is a staple to Monks that does very well in AoE encounters like challenge dungeons and terror rifts. The fairly new Tranquil Palm Exploding Palm Monk is also sometimes used for AoE damage but the old meta Cyclone Strike Tempest Rush Monk is still considered the highest damage Monk build for AoE encounters.

6. Necromancer - Corpse Lance Summoner Necromancer

Corpse Lance Summoner Necromancers have an army of skeletal mages that deal very high single target damage while Corpse Lance is used to orbit your Necromancer for very high AoE damage. If you would like to specialize in a summoner build you can also use Reforge Stones to increase the damage of your summons which is very helpful for minion builds.

7. Demon Hunter - Strafe Multishot Demon Hunter

The best Demon Hunter build for AoE damage at a low to mid resonance level is the Strafe Multishot Demon Hunter followed by the Dash Spinning Chakram Demon Hunter which does much better damage at higher resonance levels. The greatest strength of the Demon Hunter class is their very high mobility. Demon Hunters aren't as strong for AoE damage as the previous builds but they make up for it with their excellent mobility and their very high single target damage.

8. Druid - Dash Werewolf Druid

The Werewolf shapeshifting form has multiple dash attacks from the recommended legendary essences that improve the builds mobility while also increasing its AoE damage. The Dash Werewolf Druid build is highly recommended because it performs very well in AoE encounters and it also has the added benefit of having very high mobility with its dash attacks.

9. Blood Knight - Whirling Strike Projectile & Shadow's Edge Blood Knight

Blood Knights are the last place AoE damage class in our rankings because their AoE damage and single target damage are lower than most of the other classes. The Whirling Strike Projectile Blood Knight is recommended for AoE when movement isn't important but many people prefer the Abomination Blood Knight because it has significantly better mobility.​
