Whirlwind Barbarian Guide

The Whirlwind Barbarian uses the Frenzy primary skill along with Whirlwind, Wrath of the Berserker, Chain Spear, and Undying Rage. Whirlwind is endless as long as you are alive and Wrath of the Berserker is permanent on this build with the recommended legendary items. Chain Spear will summon a Spirit of the Ancient to repeatedly cast Chain Spear, can heal you, deals damage to enemies, and draws enemies into your Whirlwind. In PvP, however, I recommend switching Chain Spear to Ground Stomp with the Pit of Ursus legs which make Ground Stomp create a ring of rock that keeps enemies from entering or exiting it. It also increases your damage and lowers the damage of enemies inside the ring of rock. This skill keeps opponents from running out of Whirlwind and helps single out opponents while also giving you an advantage inside the ring. Undying Rage is also recommended because it's one of the strongest defensives in the game.

Paragons & Legendary Skills: Whirlwind Barbarian Build

1. Vanquisher is the best damage paragon for this build because it increases your damage and attack speed on kills.

2. Gladiator is the best PvP paragon tree for this build because it gives another cheat death.

3. Vanquisher is the best paragon tree for increased magic find and has increased damage and attack speed on kills.

4. Harbinger can be used in Erebban for a life shield, for movement speed, and for moving unhindered through enemies.

5. Survivor is recommended for Vanguard so that deaths take you to one life instead of killing you.

6. The best legendary skill for this build is Lightning Rod which deals damage after hitting an enemy 10 times in 3 seconds.

Main Hand

Fallowed Field - Whirlwind now consumes life and can continue as long as you still have blood in your veins. The movement speed of Whirlwind is also no longer slowed.

Off-Hand

Sundered Legacy - Wrath of the Berserker now burns enemies, increases movement speed, and has a reduced cooldown.

Main Hand 2

Riddlerue - When Frenzy deals a critical hit your attack speed is increased for a short duration.

Off-Hand 2

1. Steel Lamprey (for PvM) - Chain Spear now heals you when it hits an enemy.

2. Falling Thunder (for PvP) - Wrath of the Berserker also increases your damage when you are near a bleeding enemy.

Helmet

Lasting Hate - Wrath of the Berserker has a greatly increased duration.

Shoulders

The Coming Storm - Wrath of the Berserker has a reduced cooldown.

Chest

1. Shackled Fate (for PvM) - Chain Spear now summons a Spirit of the Ancients that repeatedly casts Chain Spear.

2. The Gathering (for PvP) - Whirlwind also now repeatedly draws in nearby enemies.

Legs

Buried Talons - Chain Spear increases your damage for a duration when it hits an enemy.

Recommended Sets

1. Grace of the Flagellant (4-6 Set) - Increases your channeled skill damage (2 set), deals damage every time you hit an individual enemy 5 times (4 set), and gives a 4% chance to damage and stun enemies with a 40 second cooldown (6 set).

2. Untouchable Mountebank (4 Set) - Great for PvP for a large life shield to improve your defenses.

Best Curses

1. Atrophied - Continual damage causes a dark field to appear under enemies that deals damage over time.

Best 5 Star Legendary Gems

1. Roiling Consequence - Increases your critical hit chance and causes critical hits to burn enemies.

2. Golden Firmament - Causes a ranged wind damage attack and increases your evasion.

3. Seeping Bile - Gives a low chance to poison enemies on hit dealing high damage over time (great for fast attacks).

4. Frozen Heart (should be switched to for PvP) - Gives a life shield for a medium duration and chills enemies.

5. Maw of the Deep (should be switched to for PvP) - Deals damage, causes a draw in, and knocks up enemies.

Best 2 Star Legendary Gems

1. Pain Clasp - Gives increased damage against enemies with a continual damage effect on them.

2. Viper's Bite - Poisons enemies on cooldown and triggers the damage increase on the Pain Clasp legendary gem.

3. Mother's Lament - Increases your critical hit chance and causes enemies to bleed.

4. Igneous Scorn (For PvM only) - Used with Roiling Consequence and Mother's Lament to deal damage on critical hits.

5. Fervent Fang (for PvM only) - Gives enemies a stacking damage taken increase when they are hit by an attack.

Best Starter 1 Star Legendary Gem

1. Entropic Well - An excellent 1 star legendary gem that increases your skill damage but it should eventually be replaced.

Regular Gems

Prioritize Tourmalines for added damage in red sockets and Citrines for Potency which increases harmful effects duration in yellow sockets. You should also use your highest refinement Aquamarines and Sapphires which give increased armor and armor penetration in blue sockets. You can optionally combine all of your Rubies and/or Topazes into a single higher refinement Ruby and/or Topaz and use one of each in your equipment early on for a higher level of refinement.

Gem Notes

Viper's Bite and Seeping Bile deal continual damage which trigger the damage increase from the Pain Clasp legendary gem. Seeping Bile has a 4% chance to proc but with Whirlwind you will attack extremely quickly which means it will trigger much more often. Roiling Consequence and Mother's Lament both give increased critical hit chance and pair well with Igneous Scorn which deals damage on critical hits. Igneous Scorn should, however, eventually be replaced with the 5 star Maw of the Deep legendary gem at higher gear levels for increased damage and crowd control. Golden Firmament is a fairly new 5 star gem that has wind damage, evasion ,and it triggers Firestorm for more damage when paired with the burning damage from Wrath of the Berserker and/or the Roiling Consequence legendary gem. Fervent Fang is a nice gem and can be used in PvM but it should be replaced with Frozen Heart in PvP for a large life shield and to chill enemies.
