Whirlwind Barbarian Guide

The Whirlwind Barbarian uses the Frenzy primary attack along with Whirlwind, Wrath of the Berserker, Chain Spear, and Undying Rage (defensive), or optionally Cleave (offensive). In the previous patch Wrath of the Berserker changed from a retaliation with self damage build to a bleed build. With the recommended essences Whirlwind restores energy when it hits bleeding enemies, Wrath of the Berserker increases your damage and movement speed against bleeding enemies, and Chain Spear summons a Spirit of the Ancients that repeatedly casts Chain Spear which draws enemies into your Whirlwind. If you want to PvP with Whirlwind you can optionally use Ground Stomp in the place of Chain Spear with the Pit of Ursus essence. The Pit of Ursus essence creates a ring of rock that keeps enemies from entering or exiting it which helps single out opponents and while inside the ring you deal more damage and your opponents deal less damage. The Undying Rage Barbarian skill is one of the best defensive skills in the game and should be used when there is a chance of dying. You can optionally switch to the more offensive Cleave skill whenever it's needed for higher damage.

Paragons & Legendary Skills: Whirlwind Barbarian Build

1. Vanquisher is the best damage paragon for this build because it increases your damage and attack speed on kills.

2. Gladiator is the best PvP paragon tree for this build because it gives another cheat death and helps with loss of control.

3. Vanquisher is the best paragon tree for increased magic find and has increased damage and attack speed on kills.

4. Harbinger can be used in Erebban for an absorb shield, movement speed, and to move unhindered through enemies.

5. Survivor is the recommended paragon for Vanguard because it gives a cheat death that works in Vanguard.

6. The best legendary skill for this build is Lightning Rod which deals damage after hitting an enemy 10 times in 3 seconds.

Whirlwind Barbarian Skills and Equipment:

Skills

Main Hand

Reel of Kattas - Whirlwind now restores energy and increases attack speed against bleeding enemies.

Note: This item replaced Fallow Field in a previous patch as the highest damage option.

Off-Hand

Bloodseizer - Wrath of the Berserker now increases damage and movement speed against Bleeding enemies.

Note: This item replaced Bergbreaker in a previous patch as the highest damage option.

Main Hand 2

Borrowed Might (with Cleave) - Cleave now summons a Spirit of the Ancient to Cleave nearby enemies.

Riddlerue (with Undying Rage) - When Frenzy deals a critical hit your attack speed is increased for a short duration.

Off-Hand 2

Falling Thunder - Wrath of the Berserker enrages you increasing your damage when you're near a bleeding enemy.

Helmet

Krubask's Sneer - During Wrath of the Berserker your critical hit chance is also increased.

Lasting Hate - Lowers Wrath of the Berserker cooldown (can be replaced with increased beneficial effect duration on gear).

Shoulders

Ox's Horns - Whirlwind now also gives enemies a stacking bleed.

Note: This makes Whirlwind cause bleed which increases your damage with the Reel of Kattas and Bloodseizer essences.

Chest

Shackled Fate (PvM) - Chain Spear now summons a Spirit of the Ancients that repeatedly casts Chain Spear.

The Gathering (PvP) - Whirlwind now also repeatedly draws in nearby enemies causing loss of control.

Note: The Gathering chest essence is recommended in PvP if you're switching Chain Spear to Ground Stomp.

Legs

Buried Talons (PvM) - Chain Spear now also increases your damage for a duration every time it hits an enemy.

Pit of Ursus (PvP) - Causes Ground Stomp to create a ring of rock that prevents enemies from entering or exiting it while also increasing your damage and lowering the damage of enemies inside the ring of rock.

Recommended Sets

1. Grace of the Flagellant (4 Set) - Deals bonus damage after damaging an enemy five times.

2. Vithu's Urges (2-4 Set) - Increases beneficial effects durations by 30% which also affects Wrath of the Berserker.

2. Untouchable Mountebank (2 Set PvP) - Gives a chance to gain an absorb shields when you are hit.

Best Curse

1. Atrophied - Continual damage causes a dark field to appear underneath enemies that deals damage over time.

2. Wired - Creates a surge of lightning on kill that jumps between enemies with a medium length cooldown.

3. Ghosted (PvP) - Summons a minion to take damage for you and can increase your attack and movement speed.

Best 5 Star Legendary Gems

1. Roiling Consequence - Increases your critical hit chance and causes critical hits to burn enemies.

2. Golden Firmament - Causes ranged wind damage attacks and increases your evasion rating.

3. Colossus Engine - Gives increased skill damage, increased area of effect, knockback immunity, and increased size (which increases your movement speed) for a medium duration with a 20 second cooldown.

4. Blood Floe - Strong gem for this build that increases damage, critical hit chance, critical hit damage, and causes bleed.

5. Starfire Shard - Deals AoE damage and stuns enemies in PvP inside the Maw of the Deep legendary gem effect.

6. Maw of the Deep - Used at high ranks to deal damage, gain a damage buff, draw in enemies, and stun enemies.

7. Wulfheort (PvM) - After damaging enemies 5 times you slash them and increase attack speed for you and your allies.

8. Seeping Bile (PvP) - Gives a 4% chance to deal high damage over time (great for fast hit rates in PvP).

9. Void Spark (PvM) - Deals AoE damage that's very effective for challenge dungeons, terror rifts, and speed farming.

10. Frozen Heart (PvP) - A strong legendary gem for PvP that gives an absorb shield and chills opponents.

Note: The Mother's Lament two star critical hit chance legendary gem can optionally be used with the new Blood Floe critical hit chance and critical hit damage legendary gem in the place of Wulfheort at lower resonance levels.

Best 2 Star Legendary Gems

1. Pain Clasp - Gives high increased damage against enemies that have a continuous damage effect on them.

2. Mother's Lament - Increases your critical hit chance and causes a blood spike that makes enemies bleed.

3. Specter Glass - Increases the damage taken by enemies after critical hits and increases your critical hit chance.

4. Fervent Fang - Gives enemies a stacking damage taken increase when they are hit by an attack.

5. Mourneskull - This legacy gem increases your damage and deals damage but it's currently drop disabled.

6. Igneous Scorn (PvM) - Can be used with Roiling Consequence and/or Mother's Lament to deal damage on critical hits.

7. Crimson Behelit (PvP) - Strong PvP legacy gem with increased damage and reduced damage taken that's drop disabled.

Note: The Viper's Bite legendary gem isn't needed to trigger the damage increase on the Pain Clasp legendary gem from there being damage over time on the target because the Ox's Horns shoulder essence already causes bleed.

Best Starter 1 Star Legendary Gems

1. Berserker's Eye - Increases all of your damage and critical hit chance but also increases your damage taken.

2. Entropic Well - A great budget one star legendary gem that increases your skill damage and attack speed.

3. Everlasting Torment - This budget gem deals damage over time which triggers the damage increase on Pain Clasp.

Note: Berserker's Eye is a great one star legendary gem that requires a high ranked up 5 star gem to match its damage.

Best Familiars

1. Savior Duskprowler - Look for a 170+ Resilience legendary Duskprowler with the Savior passive skill which provides a cheat death and temporary damage immunity. The 170+ Resilience is important for lowering the cooldown of Savior.

2. Broodtalon/Skitterwight - Look for Savior which provides a cheat death and Lingering Wounds for increased damage.

3. Any Savior Familiar - Look for any familiar with great passive skills and Savior which gives a cheat death. Savior can be used to buy time for other cheat deaths like the Undying Rage Barbarian skill and the Gladiator paragon.

4. Rare Duskprowler - Relentless Strikes is the next best skill because it gives a chance to cast the Duskprowler shield twice. Innervate which gives a chance at resetting one of the player's skill cooldowns, Steel Hide which gives a chance to block, Precision which gives critical hit chance, and Tenacity which lowers the cooldown of the shield are also desirable.

5. Magic Duskprowler - Duskprowler shields are hard to replace so the budget option familiar is a magic Duskprowler.

Note: Broodtalons and Skitterwights have status effects over a duration which increases the duration of Lingering Wounds.

Normal Gems

Prioritize Tourmalines for added damage in red sockets and a combination of Citrines and Topazes for potency and resistances in yellow sockets for the highest refinement. Potency increases harmful effects durations on enemies and resistances decrease harmful effects durations on you. Citrines for potency is preferred if you only care about PvM damage but resistances come into play more with PvP. You should also use your highest refinement Aquamarines and Sapphires which give increased armor and armor penetration in blue sockets. You can optionally combine all of your bound Rubies which give life into one or two Rubies and socket them into your equipment if they give more refinement. Gems give refinement based on their quality and refinement increases the attributes on the equipment the gems are socketed in.

Gem Notes

The Blood Floe gem is a great option when it's combined with multiple sources of critical hit chance and critical hit damage. The Viper's Bite and Seeping Bile legendary gems can be used to deal continual damage which triggers the large damage increase on the Pain Clasp legendary gem. You can also use Everlasting Torment for damage over time on critical hits as a budget option until you can afford a Seeping Bile. Golden Firmament is a very strong 5 star legendary gem that deals wind damage, increases your evasion rating, and triggers Firestorms when combined with burning damage which increases your wind damage. When using the Roiling Consequence and Mother's Lament critical hit chance legendary gems you should also consider rolling critical hit damage on every piece of gear with Reforge Stones. One of your lowest priority gems should also be switched to a Frozen Heart for PvP for an absorb shield and to chill opponents which helps your tanking.
