Whirlwind Barbarian Guide

The Whirlwind Barbarian uses the Frenzy primary attack with Whirlwind, Wrath of the Berserker, Chain Spear, and Cleave (offensive) or Undying Rage (defensive). In the previous patch Wrath of the Berserker changed from a retaliation with self damage build to a Bleed build. With the recommended essences Whirlwind restores energy when it hits bleeding enemies, Wrath of the Berserker increases your damage and movement speed against bleeding enemies, and Chain Spear summons a Spirit of the Ancients that repeatedly casts Chain Spear which also draws enemies into your Whirlwind. You should use the more offensive Cleave skill whenever it's needed for more damage. The Undying Rage Barbarian skill can also be used for a cheat death that can fully heal you because it's one of the strongest defensive skills in the game.

Paragons & Legendary Skills: Whirlwind Barbarian Build

1. Vanquisher is the best damage paragon for this build because it increases your damage and attack speed on kills.

2. Gladiator is the best PvP paragon tree for this build because it gives another cheat death and helps with loss of control.

3. Vanquisher is the best paragon tree for increased magic find and has increased damage and attack speed on kills.

4. Harbinger can be used in Erebban for an absorb shield, movement speed, and to move unhindered through enemies.

5. Survivor is recommended in Vanguard when you have a low charm because it has a cheat death that works in Vanguard.

6. The best legendary skill for this build is Lightning Rod which deals damage after hitting an enemy 10 times in 3 seconds.

Main Hand

Reel of Kattas - Whirlwind now restores energy and increases attack speed against bleeding enemies.

Note: This essence replaced the Fallow Field essence in a previous patch as the highest damage option.

Off-Hand

Bloodseizer - Wrath of the Berserker now increases damage and increases movement speed against Bleeding enemies.

Note: This essence replaced the Bergbreaker essence in a previous patch as the highest damage option.

Main Hand 2

Borrowed Might (With Cleave) - Cleave now summons a Spirit of the Ancients to cleave nearby enemies.

Riddlerue (With Undying Rage) - When Frenzy deals a critical hit your attack speed is increased for a short duration.

Off-Hand 2

Falling Thunder - Wrath of the Berserker enrages you increasing your damage whenever you're near a bleeding enemy.

Helmet

Krubask's Sneer - During Wrath of the Berserker your critical hit chance is increased.

Shoulders

Ox's Horns - Whirlwind now also gives enemies a stacking Bleed that deals damage over time.

Note: This makes Whirlwind cause Bleed which increases your damage with the Reel of Kattas and Bloodseizer essences.

Chest

Shackled Fate - Chain Spear now summons a Spirit of the Ancients that repeatedly casts Chain Spear.

Legs

Buried Talons - Chain Spear now also increases your damage for a duration every time it hits an enemy.

Recommended Sets

1. Grace of the Flagellant (4-6 Set) - Deals additional damage after dealing damage to an enemy five times.

2. Vithu's Urges (2 Set) - Increases beneficial effects durations by 30% which also affects Wrath of the Berserker.

2. Untouchable Mountebank (2 Set PvP) - Gives a chance to gain an absorb shields when you're hit by an enemy.

Best Curse

1. Lashed - Use at least four of this curse to make your primary attacks create three damaging whips on cooldown.

2. Wired - Creates an AoE damage surge of lightning on kill that jumps between enemies with a medium length cooldown.

Best 5 Star Legendary Gems

1. Roiling Consequence - Increases your critical hit chance and causes critical hits to burn enemies.

2. Golden Firmament - Causes ranged wind damage attacks and increases your evasion rating.

3. Colossus Engine - Gives increased skill damage, increased area of effect, knockback immunity, and increased size (which increases your movement speed) for a medium duration with a 20 second cooldown.

4. Blood Floe - Strong gem for this build that increases damage, critical hit chance, critical hit damage, and causes bleed.

5. Starfire Shard - This legendary gem deals AoE damage to enemies, stuns them, and burns them over time.

6. Wulfheort - After damaging enemies 5 times you slash them and increase attack speed for you and your allies.

7. Maw of the Deep (PvM) - Used at high ranks to deal damage, gain a damage buff, draw in enemies, and stun enemies.

8. Seeping Bile (PvP) - Gives a 4% chance to deal high damage over time (great for fast attack speeds in PvP).

9. Void Spark (PvM) - Deals massive AoE damage that's effective for challenge dungeons, terror rifts, and speed farming.

10. Frozen Heart (PvP) - A strong legendary gem for PvP that gives an absorb shield and chills opponents.

Best 2 Star Legendary Gems

1. Pain Clasp - Gives high increased damage against enemies that have a continuous damage effect on them.

2. Mother's Lament - Increases your critical hit chance and causes a blood spike that makes enemies bleed.

3. Specter Glass - Increases the damage taken by enemies after critical hits and increases your critical hit chance.

4. Fervent Fang - Gives enemies a stacking damage taken increase when they are hit by an attack.

5. Mourneskull - This legacy gem increases your damage and deals damage but it's currently drop disabled.

6. Igneous Scorn (PvM) - Deals damage on critical hits and increases your damage after critical hits. This gem should be the first two star gem to be replaced with a ranked up five star legendary gem.

7. Crimson Behelit - Strong legacy gem with increased damage and reduced damage taken that's drop disabled.

Note: The Viper's Bite legendary gem isn't needed to trigger the damage increase on the Pain Clasp legendary gem from there being damage over time on the target because the Ox's Horns shoulder essence already causes bleed.

Best Starter 1 Star Legendary Gems

1. Berserker's Eye (PvM) - Increases all of your damage and critical hit chance but also increases your damage taken.

2. Trickshot Gem - This gem reduces the energy consumption of channeled skills and reduces your damage taken.

3. Entropic Well - A great one star legendary gem that increases your skill damage and increases your attack speed.

4. Everlasting Torment - This budget gem deals damage over time which triggers the damage increase on Pain Clasp.

Note: Berserker's Eye is a great one star legendary gem that requires a high ranked up 5 star gem to match its damage.

Best Familiars

1. Savior Duskprowler - Look for a 170+ Resilience legendary Duskprowler with the Savior passive skill which provides a cheat death and temporary damage immunity. The 170+ Resilience on the familiar lowers the cooldown of Savior.

2. Broodtalon/Skitterwight - Look for Savior which provides a cheat death and Lingering Wounds for increased damage.

3. Ash Sweeper - Ash Sweepers are strong, especially in PvP, because they damage nearby enemies and mark an enemy reducing their damage by 20% for 3 seconds. They can also have 170+ Resilience to reduce the cooldown of Savior.

4. Any Savior Familiar - You can use any familiar with Savior for a cheat death and great passive skills as an alternative.

5. Rare Duskprowler - Relentless Strikes is the next best skill because it gives a chance to cast the Duskprowler shield twice. Innervate which gives a chance at resetting one of the player's skill cooldowns, Steel Hide which gives a chance to block, Precision which gives critical hit chance, and Tenacity which lowers the cooldown of the shield are also desirable.

Note: Broodtalons and Skitterwights have status effects over a duration which increases the duration of Lingering Wounds.

Normal Gems

Prioritize Tourmalines for added damage in red sockets and a combination of Citrines and Topazes for potency and resistances in yellow sockets for the highest refinement. Potency increases harmful effects durations on enemies and resistances decrease harmful effects durations on you. Citrines for potency is preferred if you only care about PvM damage but resistances come into play more with PvP. You should also use your highest refinement Aquamarines and Sapphires which give increased armor and armor penetration in blue sockets. You can optionally combine all of your bound Rubies which give life into one or two Rubies and socket them into your equipment if they give more refinement. Gems give refinement based on their quality and refinement increases the attributes on the equipment the gems are socketed in.

Gem Notes

The new Haunt Coil five star gem is a great gem for PvP to reduce your damage taken against one target by up to 45% for a duration. The fairly new Blood Floe gem is strong when it's combined with multiple sources of critical hit chance and critical hit damage. The Viper's Bite and Seeping Bile legendary gems can be used to deal continuous damage which triggers the large damage increase on the Pain Clasp two star legendary gem. You can also use Everlasting Torment for damage over time as a budget option until you can afford a ranked up Seeping Bile. Golden Firmament is another strong five star gem that gives wind damage, increased evasion, and it triggers Firestorms when combined with burning damage which increases your wind damage. When using multiple legendary gems that give increased critical hit chance you should consider using Reforge Stones to roll increased critical hit damage on your equipment. One of your lowest priority gems should also be switched to a Frozen Heart for PvP for an absorb shield and to chill opponents for better tanking.
